Fire Service Visit – Wednesday 15th January, 2020

Northamptonshire Fire Service [Wellingborough] visited Wollaston School to take Year 12 & 13 Public Service students through some of the recruit tests used during selection.  This included an enclosed space test which tests a candidates spatial awareness and confidence in confined spaces, a hose run which tests the ability to run out a hose and back in under timed conditions, an equipment carry which tests aerobic fitness, muscular strength and stamina under timed conditions and a theory test.

Students are currently studying Unit 6:  Fitness Testing in the Uniformed Public Services – the results will now been used to assess their ability to meet the standards required for entry into the Fire Service.  In addition students have been completing Army and Royal Marine tests as comparisons.

Mr Beeby, event organiser, said “this is another great opportunity for our students to work alongside serving public servants and experience tests used in recruitment, our students gave their all and have certainly had a money can’t buy experience, they were a credit to the subject and the school”.

Fire officers also commented on the students impressive times during the tests.  The best times for male students went to Jakub Chyzynski who recorded a time of 3.46 minutes in the equipment carry [Standard required 5.30 minutes] and Cole Dilley with a time of 4.56 minutes in the hose run [Standard required 6 minutes].  For female students Holly Matthews took both with times of 5 minutes and 5.59 minutes for the equipment carry and hose run respectively.

This is just one of many events that students take part in during the academic year; other events include a visit by the Royal Marines visibility team, a visit to the Northampton Magistrates Court, Water-based OAA at Rock UK, a week-long trip to Lympstone in Devon which is the training base for all Royal Marine Commandos and a swimming assessment at Scott Bader as well as bespoke events run by Public Service staff throughout the year.

If there are any current Year 11 students who want to know more or who are thinking of taking the course next year please come and see us.
